Center for Cement Composite Materials

Center

The Center for Cement Composite Materials (CCM) is an interdisciplinary research program dedicated to exploring the potential for developing new high-performance materials based on cementitious reactions. Research projects include evaluation of structure-property relationships (both nanostructure and microstructure) of cementitious materials, processing of very low porosity cement matrices, of cement-polymer composites, of fiber-reinforced cements, and of new cement chemistries, and modification of properties using special filler materials and novel processing techniques. The CCM manages laboratory facilities at UIUC and is part of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Faculty in CCM are affiliated with CEE, MSE, GEOL, CH E, and CHEM. The Center Director is Prof. Leslie J. Struble, in CEE. The CCM was formed at UIUC in the mid 1980¡¦s to manage a research program funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) as a part of the DOD-University Research Initiative Program. The center was retained after funding from AFOSR ended and was a major partner in a related center, headquartered at Northwestern University, the Center for Advanced Cement Based Materials (ACBM). From 1989 until 2000 ACBM was one of several Science and Technology Centers supported by the National Science Foundation, since 2000 ACBM has been supported by an industrial consortium, and CCM continues to be a partner in ACBM.

Laboratory Facilities

The Center has laboratory equipment for characterization of cement and related materials. This equipment is maintained as a shared resource for the University. It may be used by properly trained faculty, students, and staff of the University. Center staff are available to train users, to assist Center members in using the equipment, and to run tests. A laboratory fee is charged for use of the equipment, for training, and for testing by Center staff. Contact Professor Leslie J. Struble for information or to schedule operation or training. Non University organizations can request testing using the Center's laboratory equipment and Center staff must run these tests. A Technical Testing Contract is required. Contact Professor Leslie J. Struble for information.
